The Magickal and Mystical
Uses of Runes
(How to Read Runes and
use them in Magick)
Hagalaz
Mundane Meaning - Hail
Divinatory Meaning - The wrath of nature, storm, hail, wind, destruction, drastic changes, ordeal, disaster, clearing out of the old, tempering, testing, divine retribution, penance, punishment, forced trauma, karmic lessons, uncontrolled forces, pain and loss.
Merkstave (reversed) - Hagalaz can not be reversed.
Magickal Meaning - Use Hagalaz to remove unwanted influences or break destructive patterns in your life. It is a strong help in astral attracks. Care must be taken to not use this rune for negative purposes.
Analysis - Much like the Tower card in Tarot, Hagalaz is a destructive rune only if you choose to see it that way and refuse to learn the lessons it has to teach. The concept of clearing out the old to make room for the new is seen in almost every culture in the world and through history and Hagalaz should be seen as a call for this.
That does not mean the journey will be easy. The cleaning out may well take the form of destruction or loss, yet it is necessary to growth and advancement.
This often happens after a period of ease or complacency, almost as if the Gods suddenly give us a slap to wake us up and get us moving forward with our lives.
Associated Gods and myths - Ragnarok, Loki, Frost Giants, Hella
